Afghan Rulers Utilized Left-Behind British Gear to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Is Told
An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned confidential equipment allowing the Taliban to locate local individuals that had served with international military.
Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger
The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.
Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's response of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data involving approximately 19k Afghans who had applied to relocate to Britain to avoid militant rule.
The Information Breach Occurred
An electronic document containing confidential details, including names, contact details and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at special operations center in February 2022.
The incident became known in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had sought to move to the UK appeared on social media.
Taliban Capabilities
Many believe there's a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your exact position. That is what the unit achieved.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, Person A confirmed: “They've got everything.”
Consequences of the Data Breach
Early investigations submitted to the committee estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been executed.
A legal restriction concerning the incident was implemented in last year and prevented all details concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.
“We advised that they moved when possible and switched their contact details. These represented the crucial data that, should militant forces had access to such data, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.
Disputed Conclusions
The whistleblower disputed that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.
“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from militant forces; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves former occupations.”
She detailed horrific treatment experienced by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.
“Instances include four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to try to get households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
