Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
