Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Shortly After Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan backed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the conflict on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he added.
