The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
