The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
An recent term came to light several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what unity looks like.
Eurovision, of course banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
