That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. The obvious and straightforward reality that the Savior from scripture requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
