Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming Head of State.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly focused on promises to combat increasing violence and radically restrict immigration.
He consistently blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as building detention centers, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Continental Shift
Many analysts see Kast's success as aligning with a broader conservative trend in Latin America, following recent political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his decisive popular vote victory, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.
This legislative landscape may hinder his policy goals, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"We have several aspects about what a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will achieve them," commented a political science expert.
The expert stated, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. However the area with considerably less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
