Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
